    • Additional Adjustments to include:
    (2+) Positive Experiences:
  • Farewell to Wings: Although it might not seem so on the surface, Ariadne considers losing her wings one of the most important and ultimately-positive experiences of her life. Although she would come to miss flying, she always rationalized that it was worth it, for what she gained. For the first time in her life, Ariadne was not marked as different. She was able to pass as Human, to live without fear of a hunter tracking her down and hurting her. As a Human, many doors opened up to her that would have otherwise been closed. She was able to attend royal courts. Serve the royal household. And eventually become an unobtrusive observer and spy. No one judged her for being Alastrian. No one knw.
  • School Daze: Attending school was one of the great highlights of Ariadne's life. After she was taken in by Aunt Lysia and could pass for Human, one of the first things she wanted to do was attend a school. She was only vaguely aware of the concept, but she was eager to learn. It's a point of pride that Ariadne alone, among the Alastrians of her generation, learned how to read and write, not just in Common, but in many languages. School was also her first opportunity to make friends who weren't brothers or sisters. In particular, she befriended an Elf girl named Zara, who came to regard her like family. She even invited Ariadne to join her family for holiday celebrations. This eventually led to Ariadne adopting the Elf faith, because she was so impressed by the beauty and closeness that she saw.

  • (2+) Negative Experiences:
  • Lief: When Ariadne was seven, one of her brothers, Lief, crossed paths with a group of hunters. They stripped him naked, shaved his head, and left him alone in the forest. Ariadne's family found him two days later, shivering and scared senseless, unable to speak or make eye contact for weeks. The incident taught Ariadne, for the first time, how deeply dangerous it was to be Alastrian. And despite her generally optimistic outlook on life, it has stuck with her. She has an innate sense of self-loathing about Alastrians. Although she would never admit it out loud, she's often deeply ashamed of who and what she is. Which means she goes to great lengths to hide it, even with people who know the truth.
  • The Fire: At the age of ten, a forest fire ravaged Deleo, one she would later learn was set by a warlord calling himself the Red Dragon. As it happened, Ariadne was up in a tree, sulking over her latest quarrel with her mother when the blaze started. Every child in the litter had been taught, at the first sign of danger, to run. Or if possible, fly. When Ariadne smelled the smoke, she did just that, moving through the canopy and cutting up into the air, high above the trouble. She screamed out the names of her brothers and sisters, but was unable to find any of them in the ensuing chaos. For three days, there was nothing but fire and smoke and ash. The incident left her with a textbook case of survivor's guilt.
Which may explain why she's often so willing to put herself on the line for the people she cares about.

  • (2+) Significant Relationship Moments:
  • Rotspine: Ariadne's relationship with her mother was eternally contentious. This is largely because they were opposites in almost every way. Where Ariadne was an optimist, Rotspine was a pessimist. Where Ariadne was flexible and eager to try new things, Rotspine was stubborn. Where Ariadne was adventurous, Rotspine was traditional. Rotspine couldn't help it, of course. She experienced a great deal of pain and suffering at the hands of humanoids. As a youth, she was imprisoned as the familiar to a powerful witch. When she had children of her own, she saw the horrors that humanoids could cause her children. Ariadne, meanwhile, was shielded from the worst, and dreamed of the best. The two of them butt heads throughout Ariadne's childhood, causing Ariadne, ironically, to grow more like her mother in time: Stubborn. Despite their many differences, most of Ariadne's survival instincts were inherited directly from Rotpsine. A short story.
  • Princess Amanda: In a direct contrast to Rotspine, Princess Amanada--a surrogate mother for Ariadne in some ways--taught her to approach life differently. Although Amanda was under no illusions that life was easy, perfect, or fair (she'd had her share of losses), she encouraged Ariadne to be her most Ariadne-like self. Amanda (and Lysia) did not look at Ariadne and decide to train a spy. They saw the goodness in her, the stealth, the determination, and encouraged her to follow the path that was right for her. Amanda also nurtured Ariadne's sense of wonder. Her ability to see the best, even in the very worst of people. Another short story.

  • Deer Country Attributes

    • Canon Powers:
    Abilities:
All of Ariadne's special abilities derive from the fact that she is Alastrian. A bit on Alastrian biology can be found here.
-Talons: Alastrians are equipped with sharp, retractable black talons that can penetrate most surfaces, including soft metals. These are generally used to climb or, in rare instances, as weapons in hand-to-hand combat.
-Camouflage: About a third of the Alastrian population (including Ariadne) possess the ability to assume a Human appearance. In her natural state, Ariadne has mint green skin and pastel blue hair. With her camouflage ability, she can secrete pheromones which allow her appear as having pink-ish skin and brown hair. She can maintain this appearance for days at a time.
-Sonic Ability: Alastrians are capable of emitting an exceptionally loud scream that can shatter glass and occasionally render people unconscious.
-Alastrian Kiss: Among the Alastrians, it's the males who give birth. The mating process begins with what's known as an "Alastrian kiss." Essentially, when Ariadne joins hands with someone, she can transfer a sense of euphoric pleasure to them. It's not terribly useful, except in romantic situations. And she can genuinely only do it with someone she actually cares about.

    Strengths:
-Athleticism: Ariadne is exceptionally good at climbing trees, jumping from high places and landing on her feet, and engaging in hand-to-hand combat.
-Ranged: Ariadne prefers to use a sling when engaged in combat. It usually doesn't cause permanent damage and she has excellent aim. (She does NOT use a slingshot.)
-Heightened Senses: All five of Ariadne's senses are sharp. She can hear heartbeats across the room. She can usually smell the difference between different races. Her eyesight makes her an excellent lookout. Think of it like the generic vampire trope of having incredible senses.
-Appearance: Ariadne is very, very pretty. By Human standards.
-Sleight-of-Hand: In the past few years, Ariadne's been trained to be a thief. She has a very light touch and dexterous fingers that can easily slip into and out of pockets.
-Language: Ariadne and her kind pick up on new languages exceptionally fast. This also translates to her ability to learn music and musical instruments.

    Weaknesses:
-Back: Since losing her wings, Ariadne's back is incredible sensitive. Light blows cause her agonizing and debilitating pain which can knock her out of a fight for a long stretch of hours. She also has some ugly scars that are visible if she wears something backless.
-Hair: For reasons unknown (the Alastrians are not scientific), if an Alastrian's hair is cut, they become lethargic and weak until it grows back.
-Delicate: Ariadne is, overall, a bit of a delicate girl. She can take a beating, but bruises easily. She's also not exceptionally strong. Adding that to her youth means that she's often not taken seriously.
-Naivete: This is pretty much what it says on the can. Ariadne is incredibly trusting and naive. She doesn't have a lot of experience out in the world. And she pretty much always gives people the benefit of the doubt. Innocent until proven guilty.
-Inexperience: Going hand-in-hand with Ariadne's naivete is the fact that she lacks a lot of experience with basic tenets of civilization. She doesn't know how to do basic things like cook, sew, use barter for goods, ride a horse, or fight with metal weapons. Many of these things, in fact, fascinate and entrance her.
-Appearance: When in her natural state, Ariadne can be quite frightening, which makes it very difficult for her to interact with society.

    • Blood Type: Warmblood, retaining canon abilities
    • Omen: A somewhat large humming bird with ombre wings, named Windy. Like Ariadne, Windy is innately curious. However, she is far more aggressive, with a tendency to immediately stick her nose (well, beak) into anything and everything. She also channels some of Airy's (Windy? Airy? Get it?) own aggression, often, shoving Airy toward a goal or person or place of interest.
    • Blessed Day: April 30, her birthday!
    • Patron Pthumerian: Ariadne's patron is Argonaut, with whom she shares several characteristics, most notably an insatiable sense of curiosity and the stubbornness not to give up hope. As Ariadne comes from a world where the gods regularly walk among mortals and interact with their day-to-day activities, she will be intrigued by Argonaut and likely accept the possibility of a patron without too much difficulty, especially given one with a personality that overlaps her own. She'll actively seek him out, at first to simply learn more about him. And as she does, she'll likely grow protective. Because Ariadne protects the people she cares about. And someone who helps to help restore hope is clearly someone worth caring about.
    • Blood Power Manifestation: Ariadne is coming into the game as a Warmblood, so I imagine she won't be noticing anything new or different about herself. Given her strong sense of smell, however, she will notice that the people she remembers from Deerington smell all kinds of different and she'll have to take some time to adjust to their new scents.
