★ Character Information ★
Character Name: Ariadne
Character Age: Nineteen
Character Species: Ariadne is an Alastrian, considered a "demonoid" race in her realm, because Alastrians are born with wings, in addition to their arms and legs. Ariadne actually sacrificed her wings at the age of ten, in order to pass for human, but those will be coming back with her as a Legend. Compared to humanoids, Alastrians have heightened senses, but their strength is tied to their hair--which is often traded as a luxury good. Alastrians are green-skinned, with pastel hair and gray eyes. Their blood is lavender. About one-third of the population can alter their appearance to blend in with humanoids. The origins of the Alastrian race are shrouded in mystery and somewhat lost to time. Most scholars seem to believe that they evolved from reptiles, possibly dragons or chameleons. Although an unpopular theory, there is some support for the belief that the Alastrians might also be partly descended from Elves. All Elves are born with blue eyes. All Alastrians are born with gray. The theory also suggests that the magical properties of Alastrian hair might hint at some partly-Elvish ancestry. But any talk of a relationship between the Alastrians and Elves is whispered in dark corners. More on Alastrian history and biology can be found here. It's very long, so I didn't want to copy the whole thing into the app.
Current Health: Perfectly healthy.
Outfit: Ariadne will arrive wearing gray, leather leggings, brown leather books that rise to just around the knee, a red tunic with short sleeves and a cut-out back, a brown leather jacket, brown leather gloves, a bronze arm cuff shaped like a curling vine, a leather thong in her hair, and a leather pack slung over one shoulder.

  • Short Version: Ariadne was born to an Alastrian family in the kingdom of Deleo. Alastrians generally hide because they're considered "demons" and are often hunted for their hair, which is considered a luxury good (thing elephant ivory). Ariadne's parents, Feofan and Rotspine, kept their family of twenty children hidden. Ariadne was a bit of a rebellious middle child, eager to explore the world and get to interact with humanoids. This meant she fought with her mother a lot. One fight made her climb into a tree to sulk. Because of this, she survived a terrible fire, set by a warlord named the Red Dragon.

Ariadne was found in the wreckage and taken to the kingdom of Valeria, where she was adopted by her aunt, Lysia, who also happened to be the royal translator for Princess Amanda. Additionally, Lysia and Amanda were staging a secret resistance against the Red Dragon. Ariadne traded in her wings to pass for Human. She attended school for a little while, before she was made apprentice to her aunt, trained to be both a translator and a spy.

Serving the resistance, Ariadne went on many adventures, but things are looking pretty bleak, since the Red Dragon is poised to conquer the entire realm.

Canon Point: Just after her nineteenth birthday.

    ★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

    Skills:
  • Athleticism: Ariadne is exceptionally good at climbing trees, jumping from high places and landing on her feet, and engaging in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Ranged: Ariadne prefers to use a sling when engaged in combat. It usually doesn't cause permanent damage and she has excellent aim. (She does NOT use a slingshot.)
  • Heightened Senses: All five of Ariadne's senses are sharp. She can hear heartbeats across the room. She can usually smell the difference between different races. Her eyesight makes her an excellent lookout. Think of it like the generic vampire trope of having incredible senses.
  • Sleight-of-Hand: In the past few years, Ariadne's been trained to be a thief. She has a very light touch and dexterous fingers that can easily slip into and out of pockets.
  • Language: Ariadne and her kind pick up on new languages exceptionally fast. This also translates to her ability to learn music and musical instruments.

  • Canon Abilities:
  • Talons: Alastrians are equipped with sharp, retractable black talons that can penetrate most surfaces, including soft metals. These are generally used to climb or, in rare instances, as weapons in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Camouflage: About a third of the Alastrian population (including Ariadne) possess the ability to assume a Human appearance. In her natural state, Ariadne has mint green skin and pastel blue hair. With her camouflage ability, she can secrete pheromones which allow her appear as having pink-ish skin and brown hair. She can maintain this appearance for days at a time.
  • Sonic Ability: Alastrians are capable of emitting an exceptionally loud scream that can shatter glass and occasionally render people unconscious.
  • Alastrian Kiss: Among the Alastrians, it's the males who give birth. The mating process begins with what's known as an "Alastrian kiss." Essentially, when Ariadne joins hands with someone, she can transfer a sense of euphoric pleasure to them. It's not terribly useful, except in romantic situations. And she can genuinely only do it with someone she actually cares about.

  • Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: Ariadne will regain her wings, although unlike before, she'll need to summon them, they won't just be part of her on a day-to-day basis. Additionally, she'll gain a glowing halo when she's particularly happy.
Role Reasoning: Ariadne generally sees herself as a side character in her own story. She's there to support others and to do what needs to be done. However, she has the potential to be not only a hero, but to be a leader. She's just never been given the chance. I would love to see her positive outlook and friendly disposition allow her to become more of an inspiration to others. Although she comes off as naive and too trusting, she has a genuine belief in goodness, that can potentially be infectious. She needs a chance to shine!
    ★ Personality ★

Please choose one of the follow options for your personality section. Please clarify which option you have picked and, if option 2, which questions you are answering:

Option 1. Going with Option 2, but I have a full personality analysis here.

Option 2. My chosen questions and answers are below!

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them? At the age of ten, a forest fire ravaged Deleo, one she would later learn was set by a warlord calling himself the Red Dragon. As it happened, Ariadne was up in a tree, sulking over her latest quarrel with her mother when the blaze started. Every child in the litter had been taught, at the first sign of danger, to run. Or if possible, fly. When Ariadne smelled the smoke, she did just that, moving through the canopy and cutting up into the air, high above the trouble. She screamed out the names of her brothers and sisters, but was unable to find any of them in the ensuing chaos. For three days, there was nothing but fire and smoke and ash. The incident left her with a textbook case of survivor's guilt. Which may explain why she's often so willing to put herself on the line for the people she cares about.

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why? Ariadne's relationship with her mother was eternally contentious. This is largely because they were opposites in almost every way. Where Ariadne was an optimist, Rotspine was a pessimist. Where Ariadne was flexible and eager to try new things, Rotspine was stubborn. Where Ariadne was adventurous, Rotspine was traditional. Rotspine couldn't help it, of course. She experienced a great deal of pain and suffering at the hands of humanoids. As a youth, she was imprisoned as the familiar to a powerful witch. When she had children of her own, she saw the horrors that humanoids could cause her children. Ariadne, meanwhile, was shielded from the worst, and dreamed of the best. The two of them butt heads throughout Ariadne's childhood, causing Ariadne, ironically, to grow more like her mother in time: Stubborn. Despite their many differences, most of Ariadne's survival instincts were inherited directly from Rotpsine. A short story.

  • What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise. For all of her talent with language, Ariadne sometimes struggles to communicate. Her sheltered childhood meant that she grew up without a lot of social interaction. She can understand what people say, but not always what the words actually mean. Metaphors, idioms, and figures of speech absolutely fly right over her head. She struggles with social norms, trying to follow them, but not understanding their origins, so she often gets it wrong. This is frustrating to her, as it reminds her of how far she has to go. And because she lives in fear of being found out as an Alastrian. Going along with this, she has an intense, insatiable curiosity. Which means that she sometimes asks questions that she shouldn't, that could potentially be seen as too personal, as insulting, or as crossing some kind of invisible, social line. In much of her life and her work, she's gotten by with saying as little as possible, but that's not going to be an option here. And hopefully, speaking her mind will help her slowly start to become the truest Legend she was meant to be!

  • What would your character sacrifice to get what they want or to reach their potential? What have they sacrificed already? In order to do the most good, one has to be able to exist in society. At the tender age of ten, Ariadne made an incredible sacrifice: She allowed her wings to be surgically removed, so she would be able to pass for Human. Ariadne's wings meant the world to her. They were an opportunity to explore and expand her horizons. They meant both freedom and a connection to her people. But she made the sacrifice and would do it again. Because being able to pass for Human opened up unique opportunities. She was able to go to school, to walk through town without suffering the consequences of deep prejudice against her race. She was able to become a part of the bigger world. And despite their many shortcomings, Ariadne loves Humans. She loves their innovation, their creativity, their thoughtfulness. Like the Little Mermaid, she yearns to be a part of their world.
